Don’t Get Sidelined with Plantar Fasciitis

What do Peyton Manning, Albert Pujols, Ryan Hall and Stephanie Catley all have in common? They are all professional athletes who have suffered with plantar fasciitis at one time or another during their careers. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know that this condition affects both professional and amateur athletes. Plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the plantar fascia—a long band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot—can cause pain in the arch of the foot or the heel. There are a variety of factors that can increase your risk for this condition including:

  • Biomechanical issues such as flatfeet or overly high arches
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Playing on hard, flat surfaces
  • Being overweight

If your Podiatrist diagnoses plantar fasciitis there are a number of nonsurgical treatment options and suggestions that may help:

  • Limiting physical activities for a time to give your heel and arch a rest
  • Stretching and physical therapy—exercises that give calf muscles a good stretch can ease pain
  • Don’t walk barefoot—it puts extra strain on the plantar fascia
  • Change to shoes that have better arch support and a slightly raised heel
  • Night splint to help keep the plantar fascia stretched overnight and reduce early morning pain that is characteristic of this condition.

At Dr. Jill’s, we offer several products that can relieve pain caused by plantar fasciitis and help reduce inflammation of the plantar fascia including, Gel Heel Cup, Plantar Fasciitis Arch Sleeve, Arch Binder and our Plantar Fascial Straps – Moleskin.

We offer a wide variety of products that can help improve your comfort and performance when doing sports. Check our online catalog for a complete listing. Help for Holiday Heel Pain Flare Ups

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we’re hearing that many of our customers are experiencing heel pain. This is no surprise to us. The holiday season mean lots of pounding the pavement—literally—looking for gifts, running errands and making the rounds of holiday parties. This can take a toll on your heels. Heel pain can have several sources. It’s natural as you age for the fat pad on your heel to wear down. This is called heel pad atrophy. Less padding means your heel is more easily inflamed. Poor arch support can also impact your heel if the plantar fascia, a long band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot becomes inflamed. Fortunately, we have products that can give your heel the extra help it needs to make it through the holiday season.

Warwick Heel Wedge—if you have an anomaly in your gait, such as feet that turn inward or outward, the effects will definitely be exaggerated with extra walking. The Warwick Heel Wedge improves walking habits and posture. It is reversible so it can be used for either inward or outward leading. Hypoallergenic and latex-free, this product is available in three sizes to accommodate male and female feet.

Gel Heel Sleeve—this product protects the heel from pressure, abrasion and friction and provides an added bonus benefit during this dry season: the medical grade gel inside the sleeve gradually dissipates a mineral oil  to moisturize, soften, soothe and rejuvenate dry skin. The Gel Heel Sleeve is washable and can be re-used over and over again. It has a universal design, so it fits comfortably on either foot.

Gel Heel Cup—your heel will feel like its floating on a gel cloud! Gel Heel Cup provides superior cushioning and relief for those who are spending long hours on their feet. Designed for use in all styles of footwear, this product can be washed and used many times.

If the holiday season has you experiencing foot pain, chances are we have a product that will help. To see a complete listing of all our products, view our online catalog. 7 Reasons to Choose Dr. Jill’s Orthotics

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know that one of the most common causes of foot pain is lack of arch support. When the arch is not properly supported, the biomechanics of the foot become imbalanced and can result in pain in the heel, arch, and forefoot and even reaching to your knees, hips and lower back. Some conditions that can occur due to abnormal foot motions include:

Orthotics Can Help

Orthopedic devices and arch support are used to treat or adjust abnormal foot motion, provide support and increase stability, control and balance as well as absorb shock and relieve pressure on uncomfortable spots on the foot. Our Orthotics Full Length are very helpful in correcting biomechanical imbalances of the foot and ankle and are more economical than custom molded orthotics. They are useful for patients who are overweight, have a leg length discrepancy or must be on their feet for long periods of time. Below are seven benefits of our orthotics:

  1. Athletes can use orthotics to optimize their performance and enhance foot comfort.
  2. Orthotics can help halt the progression of existing problems, prevent deformities from occurring or increase comfort and promote good foot care.
  3. Our orthotics are designed by a Podiatrist with years of experience treating many kinds of foot problems that have a biomechanical cause.
  4. They are super thin, lightweight and yet sturdy and durable in their construction.
  5. Our full-length orthotic is designed with shock-absorbing foam for maximum protection and comfort.
  6. These orthotics are the closest device you will get to custom orthotics without casting or digital measuring your feet.
  7. Our orthotics have a lifetime guarantee never to break, crack or bottom out.

Helping Senior Feet

In September we recognize Falls Prevention Day. One of the most common reason for falls is foot pain which can cause a patient to walk in such a way that they avoid the pain but may compromise their balance. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads,  we have many ways that patients can reduce foot pain.

Gel Heel Cup—the fat pad on the heel naturally atrophies as you age. If you get to the point where there is not enough cushioning on the heel, pain can ensue. Our Gel Heel Cup cushions your heel with every step. These incredibly comfortable gel pads are also machine washable and designed to be used in all styles of footwear.

Plantar Fasciitis Gel Sleeve—another common source of foot pain stems from the plantar fascia—that long band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot from your toes to your heel. Our Plantar Fasciitis Arch Sleeve can help relieve discomfort from high or fallen arches, tired feet or weak arches. Easy to slip on, this product can be worn with or without shoes to strengthen your arch and give the necessary support.

Achilles Heel Sleeve—this product helps bring relief for another common foot condition: Achilles tendonitis. The soft gel pad inside the sleeve can provide gentle compression and thereby reducing pain and pressure around the tendon.  An added bonus—the Achilles Heel Sleeve can be washed and re-used over and over.

Dealing with foot pain promptly and following your Podiatrist’s instructions for relieving it is just one way senior patients can reduce their risk of falls. Other recommendations include:

  • Get eyes examined regularly.
  • Discard shoes that are worn out.
  • Make modifications to your home by removing objects that can trip you up and improve safety with grab rails and additional lighting.

If you’ve been diagnosed with a chronic foot condition as a senior, chances are we have a product that will help lessen your pain. View all of our products through our online catalog. If you have questions, contact us by calling: (866) FOOT-PAD (366-8723).

Improving Comfort for All Athletes

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know that in many parts of the country, young athletes are already gearing up for the fall sports season. High schools take sports seriously and usually start even before school is in session with intense practice periods. For teens who have been inactive most of the summer this can be a recipe for podiatric disaster resulting in injuries and foot pain. Be sure that your teen is moving during the last weeks before the fall sports season starts. If they have an ongoing podiatric problem, it is strongly recommended that they get a checkup from their Podiatrist. Below are some common problems athlete’s face and some products that can help increase comfort while playing sports.

Turf Toe—this injury is a sprain of the big toe that can occur with a sudden and extreme pushing off with the foot. The injury is more apt to occur on artificial turf which can cause the foot to come to a stop more abruptly than natural grass fields, hence the name, Turf Toe. To help stiffen the sole of the shoe and limit the range of motion of the fore- and midfoot, we recommend our Carbon Stabilizer Plates. These are extremely thin and immobilize the toe to help prevent injury. They are available in men and women’s sizes and are also helpful in preventing shin splints, another common sports injury. The Turf Toe/Bunion Strap J-61 is also another great product to help alleviate pain with Turf Toe. This product adds extra support to the big toe and is latex free.

Heel Pain—many teens experience a condition known as Sever’s disease. This disorder causes severe heel pain due to the growth plate at the back of the heel not being fully developed and becoming inflamed. Gel Heel Pads provide incredible cushioning and provide comfort and pain relief with every step. These pads are designed to be worn in all types of shoes. They are washable and can be re-used many times.

Runner’s toe—a black toenail may be a cause for alarm unless you are a runner and used to this sight, which is caused by the constant impact of the toe against the front of the shoe. Our All Gel Toe Cap slips over the affected toe and helps insulate the toe against shock and pressure. Our Toe Caps – Rib Gel is another product we offer that can help relieve runner’s toe pain. The Toe Caps -Rib Gel comes in multiple size to fit any toe.

Dealing with Flip Flop-itis

What? You’ve never heard of flip flop-itis? At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we share the concern of many Podiatrists that patients who spend too many hours in traditional flip flops are likely to suffer with foot pain and possibly sustain an injury to their feet or ankles. The problem with traditional flip flops is that they offer no protection to your feet. They also have zero arch support. This can cause heel pain and aggravate the plantar fascia increasing the risk for plantar fasciitis. Below are some products to help with the effects of overuse of flip flops (but they do not take the place of wearing more supportive shoes!).

Gel Arch Pads—wearing flip flops all the time encourages your arches to flatten. Gel Arch Pads offer soft gel to support weak arches and also helps with pronated related foot problems. These self-stick cushions are easy to apply. They can be used in all styles of footwear. They are washable and can be re-used many times.

Arch Binder—this product helps relieve both arch and heel pain. An elastic sleeve provides gentle compression to the arch. The Arch Binder comfortably lifts and supports the plantar fascia. Simply slip over your foot like a sleeve. It fits either the left or right foot and is washable and re-usable.

Gel Heel Cup—sore heels will feel like they are floating on a cloud with these cushioned gel pads. Gel Heel Cups are a great item BUT they will never stay in place in an open toe shoe like a Flip Flop and are meant for sneakers or any shoes with a closed heel. They provide superior relief for tender heels. These cups can be used over and over.

Help for Patients with Haglund’s Deformity

Haglund’s deformity—more commonly known as “pump bump”—occurs when the bony enlargement at the back of the heel becomes inflamed and irritated. Oftentimes, this occurs as a result of friction from footwear, particularly stiff-backed pumps, dress shoes, work boots or ice skates. It can afflict either women or men. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we offer several options to help relieve pain from this condition.

Heel Lifts—in some cases, structural defects in the feet increase the risk for Haglund’s deformity. One such problem is overly high arches. Heel lifts can help raise your heel and thereby reduce the pressure and pain. We offer a number of different heel lifts:

  • Red Rubber—extremely firm and long lasting, our Red Rubber Heel Lifts will never flatten.
  • Foam Heel Pads—J-22 and J-64 will fit most men’s and women’s shoe sizes. The Foam Heel Pads are latex free and available in several configurations.
  • Adjustable Heel Lifts—this versatile product contains 3 layers of resilient rubber that are 1/8 inch thick. Peel off one or two layers to adjust to ideal heel height for you. Suede leather top cover and tapered ends provide maximum comfort.

Warwick Heel Wedge—another biomechanical issue that can result in Haglund’s deformity is walking on the outside of your heel. The Warwick Heel Wedge actually helps improve foot position and walking habits. It is ideal for feet that turn outward or inward because the wedge is reversible. This product is hypoallergenic and latex free. It is available in sizes Small, Medium and Large.

Plantar Fasciitis Relief

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know that heel pain is one of the most debilitating podiatric conditions for patients to deal with. Plantar fasciitis, a common culprit of heel pain, can have a few different causes. Whatever the source, however, wearing non-supportive footwear on hard, flat surfaces increases the strain on the plantar fascia and increases heel pain and discomfort. Fortunately, we have several solutions that can help cushion and protect hurting heels.

Plantar Fasciitis Arch Sleeve

This comfortable elastic sleeve contains a gel pad that can be positioned comfortably in the arch of the foot to provide support and relieve heel pain. The Plantar Fasciitis Arch Sleeve is also helpful in reducing strain on tendons and shock absorption, helping tired aching feet and preventing the foot from rolling. It can be worn with or without shoes for long-lasting comfort.

Gel Heel Cup

When you put a Gel Heel Cup in your shoe your foot will say, “Ahhhh….” This cup allows your heel to float on a soft cushion of gel and achieve superior relief for tender heels, especially if you need to stand for long hours. These heel cups are washable and can be re-used over and over again. They are designed to be used in all styles of footwear. They are also helpful in relieving discomfort caused by heel spurs, calluses and fat pad atrophy on the bottom of the heel.

Arch Binder

By providing gentle compression to the arch of the foot, the Arch Binder comfortably lifts and supports the plantar fascia with its elastic sleeve. This helps to relieve pain in both the arch and heel. The Arch Binder slips over the foot like a sleeve, allowing for comfortable positioning. It also offers plenty of support to the forefoot. Universal in size, it fits either the left or right foot. This product is washable and can be used many times with proper care.
