March Madness Highlights Basketball Injuries

It’s almost time for March Madness and at Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we know many people are looking forward to this exciting basketball event. Viewers may also see a wide variety of foot and ankle injuries occurring on the court. Basketball, like all sports, makes unique demands on your feet and can result in several different kinds of foot and ankle trouble.

Cushion the Blow

When you think of basketball you think of players pounding up and down the court. This repetitive impact puts a lot of pressure on the ball of your foot and heels.

Plantar fasciitis—an inflammation of the plantar fascia which runs along the bottom of your foot—is a common and chronic problem for many players that causes heel and arch pain. Correcting technique and wearing basketball sneakers with better arch support can help. So can using our Plantar Fasciitis Arch Sleeve or our Moleskin Plantar Fascial Straps.

Metatarsalgia and Sesamoiditis—these are conditions that are brought about by excess pounding on the ball of the foot and the metatarsals. Stress fractures are also not uncommon. Protecting the vulnerable areas are key. Our Gel Dancer’s Pad allows you to shift weight away from sore metatarsals and cushions the ball of the foot. Superior protection can also be provided by our Flat Gel Metatarsal Strap Cushion.

Twists and Turns and Sudden Stops

In addition to constant pounding, your feet have to make a lot of sudden stops and starts and changes of direction as well as pushing off to shoot and score consistently. This increases the risk of turf toe, a sprain of the big toe. Our Carbon Stabilizer Plates can reduce the risk for this disorder. Another helpful product is our Turf Toe/Bunion Strap.

Ankle sprains and Achilles tendon problems are also common among basketball players. Injuries to these areas requires proper rest, exercises and full rehabilitation in order to prevent them from sidelining a player. We recommend our Achilles Heel Sleeve and our Gel Malleolar Sleeve to help in these areas.

No matter what your favorite sport is, we have products that can protect your feet. You can see all of our products on our online catalog. All items are easily ordered online, and we offer free shipping on orders of $25 or more. Contact us by calling: (866) FOOT-PAD (366-8723).

Foot Problems Plague Football Players

Well, Super Bowl 54 is in the books and at Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we want to take this opportunity to talk about some of the injuries commonly associated with the game. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or an NFL pro, there are certain foot and ankle problems that are seen more frequently due to the movements required for the sport.

Achilles tendonitis—this is an inflammation of the long tendon that runs along the back of your lower leg connecting the calf muscle to the heel bone. A sudden burst of physical activity as well as repetitive motions that puts stress on the tendon such as sprints and hill climbing can all cause inflammation or rupture. Exercises that stretch and strengthen the calf can help. To get relief from Achilles tendonitis we recommend our Achilles Heel Sleeve or heel lifts. We offer several types of lifts including Adjustable Heel Lifts, and those made of cork and felt.

Plantar Fasciitis—running up and down the field puts a strain on the plantar fascia, the band of tissue that traces the bottom of the foot, which in turn can cause severe heel pain. Wearing shoes with good arch support off the field and keeping the plantar fascia well stretched can decrease symptoms. Our Arch Binder and Plantar Fasciitis Arch Sleeve apply gentle but firm support, while our Gel Heel Cup will protect your heel and lessen pain.

Turf Toe—another common injury to football players is Turf Toe. It is actually a sprain of the big toe and is the result of excessive pushing upward of the big toe joint that happens when running, pushing off and jumping, particularly if you play on an artificial turf field. Football players suffer the largest number of turf toe injuries. Our Carbon Stabilizer Plates are helpful in preventing or limiting turf toe injuries because they stiffen the sole of the shoe and limit the range of motion of the forefoot.

No matter what your sport, we have products that will help increase comfort and decrease risk of injury. To see all of our products, view our online catalog. All of our products can be easily ordered through our website or contact  us by calling: (866) FOOT-PAD (366-8723).

Improving Comfort for All Athletes

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know that in many parts of the country, young athletes are already gearing up for the fall sports season. High schools take sports seriously and usually start even before school is in session with intense practice periods. For teens who have been inactive most of the summer this can be a recipe for podiatric disaster resulting in injuries and foot pain. Be sure that your teen is moving during the last weeks before the fall sports season starts. If they have an ongoing podiatric problem, it is strongly recommended that they get a checkup from their Podiatrist. Below are some common problems athlete’s face and some products that can help increase comfort while playing sports.

Turf Toe—this injury is a sprain of the big toe that can occur with a sudden and extreme pushing off with the foot. The injury is more apt to occur on artificial turf which can cause the foot to come to a stop more abruptly than natural grass fields, hence the name, Turf Toe. To help stiffen the sole of the shoe and limit the range of motion of the fore- and midfoot, we recommend our Carbon Stabilizer Plates. These are extremely thin and immobilize the toe to help prevent injury. They are available in men and women’s sizes and are also helpful in preventing shin splints, another common sports injury. The Turf Toe/Bunion Strap J-61 is also another great product to help alleviate pain with Turf Toe. This product adds extra support to the big toe and is latex free.

Heel Pain—many teens experience a condition known as Sever’s disease. This disorder causes severe heel pain due to the growth plate at the back of the heel not being fully developed and becoming inflamed. Gel Heel Pads provide incredible cushioning and provide comfort and pain relief with every step. These pads are designed to be worn in all types of shoes. They are washable and can be re-used many times.

Runner’s toe—a black toenail may be a cause for alarm unless you are a runner and used to this sight, which is caused by the constant impact of the toe against the front of the shoe. Our All Gel Toe Cap slips over the affected toe and helps insulate the toe against shock and pressure. Our Toe Caps – Rib Gel is another product we offer that can help relieve runner’s toe pain. The Toe Caps -Rib Gel comes in multiple size to fit any toe.

Taking Care of Toe Troubles

Toes–they may be little but at Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we know if they’re hurting, they can cause a big problem. When toes are in pain it makes it difficult to stand or walk. Wearing shoes can become a source of excruciating discomfort. Thankfully, we offer many products to help with a myriad of toe problems. Below are some of our more popular ones.

Ingrown Toenails—cutting toenails too short or rounding the edges can allow the nail start to grow into the skin surrounding the nail bed. Wearing shoes that are too tight can also foster the development of this painful condition. For some patients, ingrown toenails are a chronic problem. If you suffer with this disorder, consider our All Gel Toe Cap or the Gel and Fabric Toe Cap.

Hammertoes—so named because of the hammer-like appearance of the toe when it has this deformity, patients with hammertoes have to be careful to treat them in the early stages while the toes are still flexible. Without treatment, hammertoes can become rigidly bent in the misaligned position leading to difficulty with balance and secondary conditions of corns and calluses from the toe rubbing against the tops of shoes. Some products to try if you have a hammertoe include, the Triple Toe Gel Crest Pad, which can be worn with the crest on top of the toes to hold down three toes and keep them straight as well as provide a barrier to footwear. Some other helpful products are: our Budin Splint Triple Toe and our Foam Toe Separators.

Turf Toe—this injury is essentially a sprain of the big toe joint that can occur from a sudden jamming of the toe or repetitive stress on the joint. Less flexible shoes can help with turf toe as well as our Carbon Stabilizer Plates, which will limit the range of motion of the forefoot.

Top 3 Foot Products to Help Runners

It’s that time of year when people are starting new fitness routines. Running is a popular choice for people who want to get in shape in the upcoming year. Runners are susceptible to specific foot problems however, that can stop a new fitness plan dead in its tracks if proper precautions are not taken. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we offer many products that will help runners decrease foot pain and prevent possible long-term problems. Below are three of our most popular:

  1. All Gel Toe Cap—Runner’s Toe is a condition where one or more of the toenails turns black. The medical term for this is a subungual hematoma, which is basically blood pooling under the nail. It is caused by repetitive jamming of the toe up against the front of the shoe as you run. Although not particularly dangerous, runner’s toe can be quite painful. Our All Gel Toe Cap is extra padded and slips over the entire toe to protect it from shock and pressure. The provides comfort and prevents additional pain.
  2. Carbon Stabilizer Plates—Used as inserts in your shoes, Carbon Stabilizer Plates stiffen the sole of the shoe and thereby limit the range of motion of the forefoot and midfoot. This makes it a great choice if you suffer from turf toe, hallux rigidus, metatarsalgia and several other conditions of the fore and midfoot.
  3. Felt Metatarsal Pads—Another product that can help with metatarsalgia and other disorders that cause pain in the ball of the foot are our Felt Metatarsal Pads. These pads offload metatarsal heads and provides cushioning.

Turf Toe Requires Special Protection

Turf toe is a sprain of the big toe joint that is often the result of injury during a sport. Most commonly, it happens to football players when they push off hard to start running or to soccer players when they come to an abrupt halt and their toe sticks while their body continues forward. This is particularly likely to occur when playing on fake turf, hence the name turf toe.

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, however, our Podiatrist knows that turf toe is also a condition that can affect more casual athletes like those who run or speed walk for fitness, do gymnastics or any activity that involves repeatedly pushing off with your big toe.

Signs of Turf Toe

Symptoms of turf toe include the following:

  • Pain at the base of the big toe
  • Swelling at the joint
  • Limited range of motion and movement of the joint

If turf toe is the result of repetitive actions, the symptoms may begin slowly and gradually get worse over time. In cases where turf toe is caused by a sudden, wrenching injury, the signs will appear at once and continue to get worse over a 24-hour period.

Dr. Jill to the Rescue

One reason turf toe happens is that patients are wearing shoes that are too flexible and don’t provide adequate support for the activity they are doing. We offer a few products that can greatly decrease the risk of turf toe.

Carbon Stabilizer Plates are inserts that are used to stiffen the sole of your shoe and limit the range of motion of the forefoot to help decrease the flexibility of the shoe. In so doing, they help prevent big toe sprains. The plates are extremely thin—only 1/8” thick—and comfortable to wear. Carbon Stabilizer Plates are latex free and available in men’s sizes 6-15 and women’s sizes 5-12.

Our Spring Steel Insoles are also ideal for preventing Turf Toe and other foot problems requiring a semi-rigid foot bed. We offer Full Spring Steel Insoles as well as Half Spring Steel Insoles and both products are available in sizes for men and women.

In addition, our Moleskin Turf Toe/Bunion Straps are another great product we offer that can also help decrease the risk of Turf Toe.
