Protecting Painful Corns

Corns are small, circular lesions of thickened skin that kind of resemble their namesake—a kernel of corn. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we know that corns normally develop on your foot as a result of repeated friction or pressure on a particular point on your skin. Corns are frequently a secondary condition in patients that have foot deformities such as bunions or hammertoes. The toe that is bent out of position rubs against your shoes, causing repeated irritation that eventually develops into a corn. Corns can be painful and ultimately the underlying cause of the corn needs to be corrected in order to provide permanent relief. Your Podiatrist will know the right time and course of treatment to prescribe.

In the intervening time, however, we offer several products that can help keep the pressure off of an existing corn and greatly increase your daily comfort wearing shoes.

Gel Moleskin—in some cases, particularly in the early stages of a developing corn, a cushion over the irritated spot will bring pain relief. Our Gel Moleskin has a stretchy fabric top and it protects corns with a protective padding. The latex-free sheets can be custom cut to the appropriate size. Gel Moleskin is also great to have in your purse or backpack in case you feel a blister forming anywhere on your foot. Place a small piece over the area that hurts until you can get home and change your shoes.

Foam Corn Pads—made of non-medicated, medical grade foam, these pads have a center hole cut out that you place over the corn to create a barrier which reduces pressure from footwear and transfers weight away from the corn. Designed for use in all types of footwear, Foam Corn Pads have an adhesive backing that keep it in place.

Gel and Fabric Toe Cap—if a corn is large, our Gel and Fabric Toe Cap that slips over the entire toe may be the best choice. This is a good choice if the corn is caused by a hammertoe. Our Gel and Fabric Toe Cap cushions are for sore and deformed toes also and help relieve pain on the tips of the toes as well. Pads are washable and can be used over and over again. These pads have the added benefit of containing moisturizers that slowly release to help soften the skin too. Our bulk Ribbed Gel Toe Caps are available in several different sizes and can also be used for corns, moles and other sore areas on your toes.

Top 3 Foot Products to Help Runners

It’s that time of year when people are starting new fitness routines. Running is a popular choice for people who want to get in shape in the upcoming year. Runners are susceptible to specific foot problems however, that can stop a new fitness plan dead in its tracks if proper precautions are not taken. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we offer many products that will help runners decrease foot pain and prevent possible long-term problems. Below are three of our most popular:

  1. All Gel Toe Cap—Runner’s Toe is a condition where one or more of the toenails turns black. The medical term for this is a subungual hematoma, which is basically blood pooling under the nail. It is caused by repetitive jamming of the toe up against the front of the shoe as you run. Although not particularly dangerous, runner’s toe can be quite painful. Our All Gel Toe Cap is extra padded and slips over the entire toe to protect it from shock and pressure. The provides comfort and prevents additional pain.
  2. Carbon Stabilizer Plates—Used as inserts in your shoes, Carbon Stabilizer Plates stiffen the sole of the shoe and thereby limit the range of motion of the forefoot and midfoot. This makes it a great choice if you suffer from turf toe, hallux rigidus, metatarsalgia and several other conditions of the fore and midfoot.
  3. Felt Metatarsal Pads—Another product that can help with metatarsalgia and other disorders that cause pain in the ball of the foot are our Felt Metatarsal Pads. These pads offload metatarsal heads and provides cushioning.

We offer products that can help with nearly all foot and ankle conditions. To see our full line of products, view our online catalog or visit our Deerfield Beach, FL store. Have questions? Contact us by calling: (866) FOOT-PAD (366-8723).

New Year’s Resolutions Can Lead to Achilles Issues

Here’s a scenario that Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads commonly sees occurring in the month of January. Many people make New Year’s resolutions to get in shape. They are so gung-ho to achieve their goals that they start out a full speed—working out intensely every day for a week or two, even if they’ve been inactive for months. This often leads to very sore muscles and injuries. The Achilles tendon, the strongest tendon in the body, is one of the most commonly injured. Tight calf muscles, combined with exercise routines that involve stair steppers, hill running and prolonged activity that use the tendon quickly lead to inflammation, otherwise known as Achilles tendonitis. In worse case scenarios, tears or even a rupture can occur.

Achilles Products to Help

In most cases, rest and reducing strain on the tendon are recommended. We have products that can help:

Achilles Heel Sleeve—soft fabric contains gel pads gently compress the tendon area and reduce pressure around the sore area. The sleeve slips over the heel and up the ankle. The Achilles Heel Sleeve is washable and can be re-used over and over. It is latex-free and designed for all styles of footwear. Available in two sizes for a custom fit.

Adjustable Heel Lifts—three layers of resilient rubber allows you to set the height to 1/8, ¼ or 3/8 of an inch. Adjustable Heel Lifts have a suede leather top cover which makes them comfortable and durable. They are available in three sizes to all sizes of men and women’s shoes.

Other Heel Lifts—we also offer heel lifts made of cork, PPT and other materials to allow you to choose the best material for your comfort.

Felt Heel Padswe carry a variety of heel pads that help alleviate heel pain. These felt pads fit most women and men’s shoes and are latex free.

Gel Heel Padsthese soft gel pads cushion the heels with each step. They are washable and reusable with a velvet soft top cover for extra comfort for your heels.

Heel Elevator – This foot elevator doughnut- style device helps lift the heel off the bed to prevent pressure. The cover is washable and the Velcro closure allows for an adjustable fit.

Get Relief from Heel Pain

If all the time pounding the pavement doing holiday shopping, waiting in line at the post office and standing at holiday cocktail parties have left you with hurting heels, we at Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads have products that can bring relief. Heel pain and plantar fasciitis can be caused by an inflamed plantar fascia (the long ligament that runs along the bottom of your foot) or fallen arches. The products below are designed by a Podiatrist to reduce pain and/or help give support to arches.

Plantar Fasciitis Arch Sleeve

This easy slip-on sleeve is made to be worn with or without shoes. The comfortable sleeve holds gel in place to provide arch support. The Plantar Fasciitis Arch Sleeve is helpful for patients with fallen arches, high arches, heel spurs, tired feet and those with pronation-related problems. The unique structure and shape of the gel prevent the foot from rolling over which reduces strain on tendons and absorbs shock with every step.

 Gel Heel Cup

Made of gel, these cups provide superior cushioning making the heel feel as if it is floating. Designed to be used in all styles of footwear the pads will bring relief to those with tender heels who have to stand for long hours. It is latex-free and can be washed and reused multiple times.

Arch Binder

A comfortable elastic sleeve provides gentle compression to the arch and lifts and supports the plantar fascia. The Arch Binder offers plenty of forefoot support and relieves pain in both the arch and the heel. It fits on either the left or right foot and is washable for long-term use.

Hammertoe Helpers

A hammertoe is a deformity of one or more joints in the second, third, fourth or fifth toe that forces it to bend abnormally into a position that resembles a hammer. A hammertoe is most often caused by a muscle/tendon imbalance caused by structural or neurological changes in the foot. They may start out gradually but get worse over time. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know how painful and uncomfortable this condition can be. We offer several products to help straighten a hammertoe and also to relieve pain caused by friction and pressure on the hammertoe caused by footwear.

Budin Splints—these sturdy yet comfortable foam and elastic splints gently straighten a hammertoe. When the toe is able to lie straight the pain is alleviated in the top and tip of the toe. The toe is thereby prevented from becoming worse and can bear weight normally. Our Budin Splints are available for one, two or three toes. They feature well-padded bottoms which will cushion the ball of the foot and give you extra comfort while standing. The cushions are washable and can be re-used multiple times.

Triple Toe Gel Crest Pad—an alternative to the Budin Splints is this gel pad. It has three loops to hold three toes together and can be used either under the toes or on top of them to straighten toes and hold them in position. The soft, stretchy gel in the Triple Toe Gel Crest Pad is latex free and creates a barrier between the shoes and toes for added comfort and protection.

Wrap Straps—this simple, yet effective product allows for re-positioning of hammertoes (as well as overlapping or crooked toes). Just wrap the strap around the toes that need re-aligning and secure the Velcro at the appropriate tightness. The straps can be custom cut to the length that is optimal for your toes. The soft foam cushioning will relieve irritation and rubbing from shoes on the tops of the toes. Wrap Straps can be worn with nearly all socks and shoe types.

Hammertoe Cushion/Adjustable Gel Crest Pads – which is one of our most popular items, helps support toes which are bent due to hammertoes. These pads are washable, re-usable and available for both left and right toes. These pads can be used in all styles of footwear.

Gel Spreader with Loop – a comfortable gel toe spreader designed to spread, straighten, align and reduce friction between big toe and 2nd toe. It has a soft flexible hourglass- shaped gel toe spreader with a toe loop to help keep it in place.  The gel spreader is applied on the bottom of the toe to help elevate toe to straighten toe/hammertoe and relieve pressure.

1 Toe Gel Crest Padthese pads have multiple uses from preventing overlapping toes to elevating the tips of the toes to relieve pressure at distal tip. These comfortable Premier Gels have a soft stretchy gel loop that is reusable, washable and can be put over tops of toes to hold them down.

Lamb’s Wool – This new product provides natural, breathable air flow to reach affected areas along with additional cushioning that will help reduce pain between the toes.

In addition to hammertoes, we offer products to help alleviate the symptoms of many other chronic foot and ankle conditions. To see all products, view our online catalog or visit our Deerfield Beach store. You can also contact us for more information by calling: (866) FOOT-PAD (366-8723).

“Oh, My Sore Bunion!”

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know that patients with bunions suffer even more during the holiday season. Hours of shopping at the mall, standing on long lines at the post office and grocery store, trying to squeeze your feet into festive shoes—all of these activities and longer periods of time on your feet make bunion pain worse.

Reduce the Pain

There are ways to help keep bunion discomfort under control:

  • It’s best to avoid shoes with high heels and narrow toe boxes that squeeze the toes and put extra pressure on bunions.
  • Take breaks, especially when it comes to standing for long periods of time. Put your feet up if possible, but at the very least, get off them and sit for periods of time throughout the day. Yes, it may take a little longer to complete your holiday tasks, but you’ll be able to do more in the long run.
  • Wear your custom orthotic as much as possible if your Podiatrist has prescribed one for your bunion.

Products that Can Help

We offer many products that can help with bunion pain. A sampling of these include:

  • Gel Bunion Cushion – a flexible gel pad that slips easily over your big toe provides superior cushioning over the bunion and feels silky smooth against your skin. The gel pad conforms to the shape of your bunion and gives immediate relief from footwear pressure. Designed for use in all styles of footwear, the Gel Bunion Cushion can be washed and re-used over and over again.
  • Gel Bunion Sleeve – provides superior cushioning over the bunion area and slips on easily over the big toe. Gel bunion sleeves also come in two sizes S/M and L/XL.
  • Spreader with Bunion Combo – this product not only cushions and protects bunions, it separates the toes, encouraging proper alignment. It also prevents the first and second toes from rubbing together, thereby reducing painful irritation between the toes. The Spreader with Bunion Combo is latex free and can be worn on either the left or right foot.
  • Bunion Care Compression Sleeve – slipping over your entire foot, the Bunion Care Compression Sleeve has a large, soft gel pad inside the fabric that protects the bunion from abrasion and pressure. It also releases a medical grade mineral oil to continually moisturize and soften the skin. The pad conforms to your foot and will not create bulk in your shoes. It’s latex free and hypoallergenic.
  • Gel Bunion Night Splint – this product not only reduces bunion pressure and aligns the big toe but also stretches the muscles and tendons to slow down the progression of a bunion. Comes with an adjustable mid-foot binder and gel along the inside with leather on the exterior. Gel Bunion Night Splints come in 2 sizes that fit comfortably on both men and woman.
  • Bunion Night Splint – this splint properly aligns the big toe to reduce the bunion pressure and helps stretch the muscles and tendons to slow down the progression of a bunion. Bunion Night Splint is latex free, comes in two sizes and recommended for surgery recovery immediately following the surgical dressing removal.
  • Felt Bunion Pad – this removable and slip on felt helps alleviate the pressure of the bunion. Can be worn two different ways to accommodate the pressure you are experiencing.

These several products we offer all can help relieve your bunion pain. We also offer products that can help with many other foot and ankle conditions. Shop our online catalog to see them all or visit our Deerfield Beach, FL store. For more information, contact us by calling: (866) FOOT-PAD (366-8723).

Protecting Feet from Friction and Pressure

November is American Diabetes Month. This disease affects over 30 million Americans with another 1.5 million being diagnosed each year. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know that diabetic patients have special requirements for foot health. Poor circulation, often associated with diabetes, makes it difficult for oxygen-rich blood to get to wounds, particularly in your feet, which slows the healing process. Wounds that are difficult to heal are at risk for infection and, in the worst-case scenario, can lead to amputation. For this reason, it’s essential that patients with diabetes avoid sores and blisters. One way to do this is by reducing any possibilities of friction or pressure on the foot. If you have a bunion, hammertoe or other deformity, great care must be taken to ensure that corns are not rubbed raw or excessive pressure is not put on calluses.

Below are some products that can help protect your feet if you are a patient with diabetes:

Metatarsal and Bunion Protector Sleeve —offering two benefits in one pad, the Metatarsal and Bunion Protector Sleeve provides cushioned protection for bunions and also reduces pressure on the ball of the foot. The gel is contained within a soft elasticated forefoot sleeve which keeps the pad comfortably in place. It is available in sizes small and large and will fit either your left or right foot. Sleeves are washable and re-usable. Our Gel Bunion Sleeve also offers superior cushioning and relief from any footwear pressure and is available in two sizes: S/M and L/XL.

Metatarsal Pads—pure silicone gel provides an excellent cushion which increases comfort and protects skin from breaking down. Plantar fat pad atrophy is natural as you age but this can leave the ball of your foot vulnerable to friction and excessive pressure. Other conditions such as metatarsalgia can be relieved with our Gel Metatarsal Pads, our Gel Ball of Foot Cushions or our Metatarsal Pads which are offered in either felt or foam and 1/4 or 1/8 inch thickness.

Felt and Foam Corn Pads—corns form in response to footwear rubbing on the skin. Corns can become irritated and even turn into sores if not protected. Both our Felt Corn Pads and Foam Corn Pads cushion and protect corns. A center hole placed over the corn creates a barrier between foot gear pressure and the corn. An adhesive backing keeps the pad in place.

4 Ways to Shop More on Black Friday

Have you planned out your Black Friday shopping trip? Chances are you’ll want to go to several stores to get the best bargains and a head start on your holiday shopping. But, will your feet cooperate? At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know that there are many foot conditions that cause pain, which will slow down or even bring your marathon day at the mall to a complete halt. That’s where we come in. Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads offers many products that can help keep your feet happy and comfortable.

Below are some of our patients’ favorites:

  1. Gel Ball of Foot Cushions—soft Gel Ball of Foot Cushions provide thick cushioning that allows you to offload from sore spots and prevent pain from conditions such as dropped metatarsal heads, fat pad atrophy, neuromas and metatarsalgia. These cushions come in two different thicknesses and can be positioned exactly where most needed. (Consult your Podiatrist if you are unsure of best placement for your condition.) These gel cushions are washable and can be re-used multiple times to get you through the entire holiday season. We also offer an Ultra Thin Ball of Foot Cushions, which are also washable and re-usable.
  2. Corn Pads—there are several foot disorders that can cause a corn to develop, including hammertoes and bunions. These felt Corn Pads have a center hole and when placed over the corn will create a protective barrier that transfers pressure away from the corn. Adhesive backing assures that the pad will stay in place throughout your shopping day. We also have Gel Corn Pads that have a soft fabric sleeve with gel inside that stretches to fit toes.
  3. Gel Hammer Toe Cushions – Adjustable Crest Pad—if you suffer with a hammertoe, a long day of shopping can be excruciating. Our Gel Hammer Toe Cushion – Adjustable Crest Pad makes walking more comfortable and easier because the pads help lift and straighten toes to reduce pressure on the tips and tops of the toes. This pad can also be used to help straighten overlapping toes. An adjustable fabric loop fits any size toe. The pads are latex free and available for the left or right foot.
  4. Callus Protection—annoying calluses can also slow down your bargain hunting. Try our Gel U Shaped Pads, Gel Oval Callus Pads, or our Felt U Shaped Callus Pads to increase comfort while walking or standing by transferring pressure from the callus to the cushion.

We make products to help with many other foot disorders too. See our complete catalog online or visit our Deerfield Beach, FL store. For more information about our products, contact us by calling: (866) FOOT-PAD (366-8723).
