Padding Provides Relief from Bunion Pain

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we know that when the cooler days of fall arrive, more patients will be looking for ways to decrease the pain caused by bunions. Bunions are a deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe. They are most often caused by defective foot mechanics but can also be the result of an injury or arthritis. Whatever the reason, when you have a bunion, the big toe begins to move out of place and drift toward the second toe. Over time, the misalignment of the joint causes a bony protrusion to form on the outside of your big toe. During summer months many people are wearing sandals and other open front styles of shoes. When it’s time to go back to wearing closed shoe styles, the pain from a bunion will seem worse than ever.

Products That Can Help

We have several products that can help with bunion pain. Below, we highlight just a few:

Foam Toe Tubes—this product offers a soft, seamless cotton lining surrounded by spongy foam outer layers. These protect and cushion a bunion from the pressure and friction caused by shoes. The Foam Toe Tubes are designed to fit any size or shape toe. They can be cut to the desired length for a perfect fit. A picture instruction sheet is included in every box.

Gel Bunion Cushion—these flexible cushions feature a soft and stretchy loop that fits over your toe with a gel pad that covers the bunion. The Gel Bunion Cushion will conform to the shape of your bunion and will not get tight. It can be used in all types of footwear. Another benefit of these cushions is that they are reusable. Simply wash with a mild soap and water and allow to dry completely to use again and again. Gel Bunion Cushions are available in two thicknesses: regular and extra thick.

Felt Bunion Pad—this slip-on Felt Bunion Pad has a circle cut out that gets placed over the bunion. The sturdy felt keeps pressure off the bunion and provides a barrier between your foot and your footwear.

Gel Bunion Sleeve—this sleeve made of soft, satin fabric provides superior cushioning for bunions. Slip on the gel bunion sleeve over your big toe with ease and get immediate relief from pressure. The soft gel pad conforms to your foot without creating a bulk in your shoe. This product is washable and can be worn on either foot.

These are just a few of the products we offer to help ease the pain and discomfort of bunions. Shop our online catalog to see all of our foot care products. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us by calling (866) FOOT-PAD (366-8723) or visit our Deerfield Beach, FL store.

Memory Foam Insoles Make Your Feet Say “Ahhh….”

Do you suffer from heel pain or plantar fasciitis? After you’ve been walking or standing for a while, do your feet become tired, weak and achy? At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we have a solution your feet will love: Memory Foam Insoles.

These incredibly comfortable insoles have several distinct advantages:

Memory Fit—because they are made of memory foam, the insoles will mold to the unique shape of your feet. This means you get a memory fit every time after the initial wearing. This custom cushioning will provide a layer of protective comfort for the ball or heel of your foot.

Versatile—Memory Foam Insoles can be used in all type of footwear and shoes, including most dress styles. The insoles are sold in two sizes: Men (8-13) and Women (5-10). Simply trim the insoles to fit the inside of your shoes.

Durable—our Memory Foam Insoles are lightweight and durable. If necessary, the insole can be handwashed using water and a mild soap. Rinse thoroughly and allow the insole to air dry completely. Then, re-insert into your shoe and use again.

As with all foot pads, never place this product on an open wound. Should you experience any discomfort or pain when using the Memory Foam Insoles, discontinue use immediately. Notify your foot doctor as well.

3 Ways to Ease Achilles Pain

Your Achilles tendon runs along the back of your lower leg, connecting your heel bone to your calf muscle. Although it is one of the strongest tendons in your body, it is also one of the most frequently injured.

Achilles tendonitis and tendonosis occur when the tendon becomes inflamed. Considered an “overuse injury,” Achilles tendonitis affects both serious athletes and “weekend warriors.” Some activities that put strain on the tendon are running—particularly sprints, which cause you to push off forcefully, stair stepping and hill climbing. Any sudden increase in intensity or duration of repetitive activities that put stress on the tendon can result in inflammation. Symptoms of an Achilles disorder include pain anywhere along the tendon, tenderness and/or a feeling of tiredness or sluggishness in the lower leg.

Relieving and Protecting

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we have 3 ways to help relieve the pain and strain on the Achilles tendon. These products, all designed by a highly experienced podiatrist, can help reduce the strain on the tendon and lessen pain:

  1. Achilles Heel Sleeve—this sleeve fits over your foot and covers it from above the ankle to the middle of your foot. Made of a soft fabric with gel pads inside to cushion the back of the heel area, the Achilles Heel Sleeve protects the affected part of the heel and leg from friction while gently compressing and reducing pressure around the sore areas. The sleeve is washable, and the pads can be re-used over and over again. It comes in 2 sizes, S/M and L/XL, and is suitable for use with all types of footwear.
  2. Heel Lifts—these are often recommended by podiatrists to reduce stress on the tendon while it heals. Heel lifts help your tendon to be stretched less and therefore more relaxed. We offer 3 types of heel lifts: PPT, Cork and Adjustable Heel Lifts, which are made of resilient rubber. With the adjustable heel lifts you can peel off one or two layers to adjust the heel height for maximum comfort. Heel lifts come in various thicknesses and a number of different styles.
  3. Heel Pads—these come in two sizes, J-22 and J-64. Heel pads also offer cushioning for protection and comfort to those suffering with Achilles tendon issues.

Felt Pads Provide Callus Protection

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we offer many options for callus protection. Although calluses–those thick patches of skin that build up in a particular spot on your foot–look like a problem that is on the surface of the skin, in reality they signal a much deeper problem. A callus forms as a result of repeated pressure and is your body’s way of protecting a sore spot.

Some common conditions that can cause a callus to form include:

How Felt Pads Help

Our J-2 Felt Callus Pads surround a painful callus and reduce pain by transferring pressure from the callus to the cushion. They create a barrier between skin and shoes to help decrease pain and discomfort. The pads come in two sizes: 1/4-inch and 1/8-inch. J-2 pads are also available in a 1/8-inch foam, which also provide excellent off-loading for sore spots. Before using the J-2 Felt pads, we recommend that you talk to your podiatrist. Positioning the pad in the correct place is very important for maximum pain relief and to avoid additional injuries.

Helpful Tips

For best results, first wash your foot and dry completely. Then, carefully separate the pad from the paper backing and apply so that the opening is comfortably placed around the callus or tender area and the cushioning surrounds it. The adhesive backing will keep the pad in place. Warning: Do not place a felt pad on an open wound. If you experience any irritation or discomfort, discontinue use immediately and notify your podiatrist or medical doctor right way. Be sure to remove the cushion for at least 3 to 4 hours a day to allow the skin to breathe.

J-2 Felt Callus Pads are made of non-medicated, medical grade felt and can be used in all styles of footwear. The pads are latex free. They are sold in packages of 100 and can be purchased online. While you are there, be sure to check out all of our other products for foot problems. All of our items are designed by an experienced podiatrist to ensure quality products that fit your needs. Providing Support for Ankles

Ankle sprains are a common podiatric injury and at Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know that one of the keys to fully rehabilitating an ankle sprain is providing support and cushioning to protect the ankle. An ankle sprain is the result of overstretching the ligaments that support your ankle. When an injury of this type occurs, the podiatrist will most likely recommend that you rest the ankle and perhaps receive physical therapy to help retrain the ligaments and strengthen the muscles that surround those ligaments. It’s essential that while this healing is in process that you not experience an additional ankle twisting injury. Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads offers several products that can help.

Gel Malleolar Sleeve

Malleolar Sleeve Gel

covers your entire ankle and provides protective cushioning. What distinguishes this sleeve from others is the addition of 2 gel discs

positioned on both sides of the medial and lateral malleoli (ankle). These discs cushion and protect the ankle from impact, pressure and potential injury. The Gel Malleolar Sleeve is great to wear with ski boots, cleats, roller blades and other fitness and sports footwear. The sleeve is latex free and one size fits all.

Moleskin Rolls

Moleskin Roll - Cut to size

A top choice of athletic trainers and podiatrists, these rolls provide support to the ankle and prevent additional sprains from occurring while the ankle is healing. The rolls come in 3 convenient sizes: 2-inch, 3-inch and 2-inch cut into 12-inch x 5 yards, so you can custom create the best wrap for your ankle injury. The moleskin has its own adhesive on one side.

J Tape White

Our 100% cotton with rubber based/zinc oxide adhesive tape is a breathable material that is strong yet gentle. It tears easily lengthwise and crosswise. This latex-free tape is preferred for strains, sprains and other conditions that require immobilization with support. It comes in three sizes: 1 inch, 1 ½ inch and 2 inch.

J Ban Tan

J-Ban tape

This cohesive wrap is made of a non-woven lightweight nylon, which is soft, comfortable and porous. It is self-adherent, sticking to itself but not to skin or other materials. It does not constrict but holds well even when stretched, making it an excellent pressure bandage. J Ban Tan is available in 1, 2 and 3-inch widths.

Self-Grip Compression Wrap

self-grip soft beige tape

This unique, self-grip compression wrap provides maximum support and firm compression to ligaments, tendons and muscles. It is ideal for strains, sprains, strappings and tapings. It will stick to itself but not to skin or hair and will not come off in water. It is made of a 98% cotton and 2% latex technology blend.

Say Goodbye to Sore Feet

16203933 – patient receiving a foot massage in a room

Do you find that by the end of the day the balls of your feet just ache? This is a common complaint and we at Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads have a way to alleviate that pain: Gel Ball of Foot Cushions. Pain in the ball of the foot can have several sources:

  • Fat pad atrophy—as you age the fat pad in this part of your foot begins to thin out
  • Dropped metatarsal head pain
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Calluses
  • Neuroma

Whatever the cause of the pain in the ball of your foot, Gel Ball of Foot Cushions can help. These durable gel cushions provide substantial cushioning for the painful areas on the bottom of your foot and offload metatarsal heads. They can be used in any shoes and will greatly increase your comfort when walking or standing for long hours. The pads come in two thicknesses to ensure a comfortable fit and have a self-stick surface making them easy to apply. The pads can be placed directly on the ball of the foot or behind it for maximum pain relief. Your podiatrist can advise you on the ideal placement based on your podiatric condition.

Application and Care

To use the Gel Ball of Foot Cushions, follow these simple steps:

  1. Wash your foot and dry completely. Do not apply any lotions, powders or ointments to the skin where the pad will be placed as this can dramatically decrease the effectiveness and life of the gel pad.
  2. Position the cushion with the hole comfortably placed on or behind the painful area of the ball of your foot.
  3. When ready to remove, simply gently peel the cushion away from the skin. (It is recommended that you remove the cushion for at least 3-4 hours each day to allow the skin to breathe.)

Gel Ball of Foot Pads are durable and reusable. Hand wash the gel pad with a mild soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry. The self-adhering surface will renew once the pad is completely dry and it can be re-used many times if properly cared for.

Be aware, gel pads should not be placed on an open wound. If you experience any irritation or discomfort from the pad, remove immediately and notify your podiatrist of the reaction.

Help for Hammertoes

A common foot problem that can cause patients an immense amount of pain is a hammertoe. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we offer solutions to help deal with this potentially debilitating condition.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes are a progressive condition. Although everyone recognizes the telltale bend in one or more toe joints of a hammertoe, this deformity starts out gradually. At first you may just notice your toe starting to bend downward, but over time, the bend becomes more pronounced and the toe becomes increasingly rigid in the deformed position. Secondary conditions such as corns and calluses may then form due to the pressure and friction the toe is now experiencing in its misaligned position while wearing shoes. As a podiatrist, Dr. Jill recognizes the importance of treating hammertoes while they are still somewhat malleable. She created a product to help greatly improve mobility and reduce pain and the risk of secondary conditions.

The Budin Splint

Hammertoes can develop on any toe but the big one. Although there are several potential causes of hammertoe, the most common is a muscle/tendon imbalance. The Budin Splint is constructed of comfortable but sturdy foam and elastic materials and it gently straightens the hammertoe. This allows it to lie straight, alleviating the pain on the top and tip of the toe. The Budin Splint is available for one, two or three hammertoes on the same foot. In addition to relieving discomfort, this product has several benefits:

  • It allows the toe(s) to bear weight normally so the patient can walk with their regular gait and thus prevents other foot and lower extremity conditions from developing due to an altered gait.
  • It does away with the unsightly bulge in the top of the shoe of the patient with hammertoe.
  • It will prevent the hammertoe from progressing to a worse state.

Wrap Straps

Another product that can help with re-positioning a hammertoe is the Wrap Straps. Made of thin, soft material, these comfortable straps can be custom cut to the appropriate length and then wrapped around the affected toes and secured with an adjustable Velcro closure.

Protection for Sore Toenails

ingrown toenails

If you have ever had an ingrown toenail, you know how painful it is. A toenail the grows downward and into the skin around the nail bed causes the area to become red, swollen and very tender to the touch. Sometimes you can work the nail out of the skin by soaking the toe in warm water several times a day and gently massaging the nail bed. Often, your podiatrist will have to remove the ingrown toenail. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we have ways to help reduce the pain as your ingrown toenail heals.

Padding Brings Pain Relief

We offer two products that you can use to protect a tender toe. Both are caps that go over the entire toe, cushioning it and preventing painful pressure. One cap is a combination of fabric and gel and the other is an all-gel cap—both are latex free. These caps will relieve pain and allow you to wear shoes and continue with your daily activities until the toe is fully healed. Like all our products, the toe caps were designed by a podiatrist who truly understands the needs of patients with foot pain.  You can view the toe caps in our online catalog or contact us for more information.

Avoiding Ingrown Toenails

Some patients are particularly prone to ingrown toenails. The tendency for them can be inherited. They can also be caused by a trauma, repetitive banging of the toe (if you are a runner or soccer player, for example) or if there is another nail condition present, such as a fungal toenail. There are a few steps you can take to help prevent them from occurring:

  • Don’t wear shoes that have cramped toe boxes and squeeze toes together for long periods of time.
  • Keep nails trimmed straight across and not too short.
  • Never file toenails in a rounded shape or with curved edges.

You should also never attempt to cut out an ingrown nail or resort to “folk remedies,” like sticking a piece of cotton under the nail or cutting a notch in it. These just end up causing worse injuries and possibly a secondary infection as well.

You can order our toe caps and other foot pads online or by calling: (866) FOOT-PAD (366-8723). You can also purchase them in our store located in Deerfield Beach, FL.
