Ouch! Calluses Can be Painful

A callus is thickened area of skin on your foot that forms to protect an area of your foot. Although they appear to be on the surface, many times calluses develop due to problems much deeper in your foot. Regardless of their cause, we at Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads know that calluses can be so painful that they can make even simple daily activities like standing and walking excruciating. That’s why we offer many products to treat this problem.

Foam Callus Pads—these pads are designed with a center hole that is meant to surround the callus and protect it from pressure. Made of soft foam, these pads feature a self-adhesive backing to keep them in the right spot. Foam Callus Pads are designed to increase comfort while walking and standing and can be used in all styles of footwear.

Gel U-Shaped Pads—looking for a reusable pad to protect your callus? The Gel U-Shaped Pads can be washed and re-used multiple times. The soft gel cushions calluses to protect and prevent pain. The U-shape surrounds the sore area and transfers pressure away from the callus. Self-stick cushions are easy to apply and position for maximum comfort.

Moleskin Sheets—these soft, flannel padded cushion sheets can be custom cut to fit the callus that is causing you pain. Moleskin Sheets are non-medicated and have an adhesive backing that keeps the pad in place. Designed for use with all types of footwear, these pads are comfortable to wear under socks and hose.

Other products that we offer to aid with relief from painful calluses include: Felt Callus Pads J-2 1/8 inch, U-Shaped Felt Callus Pads 1/8 inch and U-Shaped Foam Pads ¼ inch among many others.

Protecting Feet from Friction and Pressure

November is American Diabetes Month. This disease affects over 30 million Americans with another 1.5 million being diagnosed each year. At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads, we know that diabetic patients have special requirements for foot health. Poor circulation, often associated with diabetes, makes it difficult for oxygen-rich blood to get to wounds, particularly in your feet, which slows the healing process. Wounds that are difficult to heal are at risk for infection and, in the worst-case scenario, can lead to amputation. For this reason, it’s essential that patients with diabetes avoid sores and blisters. One way to do this is by reducing any possibilities of friction or pressure on the foot. If you have a bunion, hammertoe or other deformity, great care must be taken to ensure that corns are not rubbed raw or excessive pressure is not put on calluses.

Below are some products that can help protect your feet if you are a patient with diabetes:

Metatarsal and Bunion Protector Sleeve —offering two benefits in one pad, the Metatarsal and Bunion Protector Sleeve provides cushioned protection for bunions and also reduces pressure on the ball of the foot. The gel is contained within a soft elasticated forefoot sleeve which keeps the pad comfortably in place. It is available in sizes small and large and will fit either your left or right foot. Sleeves are washable and re-usable. Our Gel Bunion Sleeve also offers superior cushioning and relief from any footwear pressure and is available in two sizes: S/M and L/XL.

Metatarsal Pads—pure silicone gel provides an excellent cushion which increases comfort and protects skin from breaking down. Plantar fat pad atrophy is natural as you age but this can leave the ball of your foot vulnerable to friction and excessive pressure. Other conditions such as metatarsalgia can be relieved with our Gel Metatarsal Pads, our Gel Ball of Foot Cushions or our Metatarsal Pads which are offered in either felt or foam and 1/4 or 1/8 inch thickness.

Felt and Foam Corn Pads—corns form in response to footwear rubbing on the skin. Corns can become irritated and even turn into sores if not protected. Both our Felt Corn Pads and Foam Corn Pads cushion and protect corns. A center hole placed over the corn creates a barrier between foot gear pressure and the corn. An adhesive backing keeps the pad in place.

Felt Pads Provide Callus Protection

At Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads we offer many options for callus protection. Although calluses–those thick patches of skin that build up in a particular spot on your foot–look like a problem that is on the surface of the skin, in reality they signal a much deeper problem. A callus forms as a result of repeated pressure and is your body’s way of protecting a sore spot.

Some common conditions that can cause a callus to form include:

How Felt Pads Help

Our J-2 Felt Callus Pads surround a painful callus and reduce pain by transferring pressure from the callus to the cushion. They create a barrier between skin and shoes to help decrease pain and discomfort. The pads come in two sizes: 1/4-inch and 1/8-inch. J-2 pads are also available in a 1/8-inch foam, which also provide excellent off-loading for sore spots. Before using the J-2 Felt pads, we recommend that you talk to your podiatrist. Positioning the pad in the correct place is very important for maximum pain relief and to avoid additional injuries.

Helpful Tips

For best results, first wash your foot and dry completely. Then, carefully separate the pad from the paper backing and apply so that the opening is comfortably placed around the callus or tender area and the cushioning surrounds it. The adhesive backing will keep the pad in place. Warning: Do not place a felt pad on an open wound. If you experience any irritation or discomfort, discontinue use immediately and notify your podiatrist or medical doctor right way. Be sure to remove the cushion for at least 3 to 4 hours a day to allow the skin to breathe.

J-2 Felt Callus Pads are made of non-medicated, medical grade felt and can be used in all styles of footwear. The pads are latex free. They are sold in packages of 100 and can be purchased online. While you are there, be sure to check out all of our other products for foot problems. All of our items are designed by an experienced podiatrist to ensure quality products that fit your needs. Say Goodbye to Sore Feet

Do you find that by the end of the day the balls of your feet just ache? This is a common complaint and we at Dr. Jill’s Foot Pads have a way to alleviate that pain: Gel Ball of Foot Cushions. Pain in the ball of the foot can have several sources:

  • Fat pad atrophy—as you age the fat pad in this part of your foot begins to thin out
  • Dropped metatarsal head pain
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Calluses
  • Neuroma

Whatever the cause of the pain in the ball of your foot, Gel Ball of Foot Cushions can help. These durable gel cushions provide substantial cushioning for the painful areas on the bottom of your foot and offload metatarsal heads. They can be used in any shoes and will greatly increase your comfort when walking or standing for long hours. The pads come in two thicknesses to ensure a comfortable fit and have a self-stick surface making them easy to apply. The pads can be placed directly on the ball of the foot or behind it for maximum pain relief. Your podiatrist can advise you on the ideal placement based on your podiatric condition.

Application and Care

To use the Gel Ball of Foot Cushions, follow these simple steps:

  1. Wash your foot and dry completely. Do not apply any lotions, powders or ointments to the skin where the pad will be placed as this can dramatically decrease the effectiveness and life of the gel pad.
  2. Position the cushion with the hole comfortably placed on or behind the painful area of the ball of your foot.
  3. When ready to remove, simply gently peel the cushion away from the skin. (It is recommended that you remove the cushion for at least 3-4 hours each day to allow the skin to breathe.)

Gel Ball of Foot Pads are durable and reusable. Hand wash the gel pad with a mild soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry. The self-adhering surface will renew once the pad is completely dry and it can be re-used many times if properly cared for.

Be aware, gel pads should not be placed on an open wound. If you experience any irritation or discomfort from the pad, remove immediately and notify your podiatrist of the reaction.

LIKE WALKING ON NAILS

MetatarsalLet’s talk about the fifth metatarsal…that area under the tiny toe. For people with high arches, often times, the bones of the fifth metatarsal take a beating. This results in calluses forming, which is the body’s way of protecting the area from further assault.

However, constant pressure on an already inflamed area can create a wound and even infection. The most effective method of avoiding this repetitious problem is to buffer the fifth metatarsal from hitting the pavement, so to speak.

The u-shaped metatarsal felt or gel pads are designed to create a cushion around the sensitive center of the nerves, off-loading the pressure and resulting in little to no contact with the painful part of the foot that can keep you from walking correctly and clearly keep you from enjoying your gait.

1032PkgDr. Jill’s Felt U-shaped Callus Pads and U-shaped Gel Callus Cushions are tough enough to withstand the repetitive pounding of the foot on hard surfaces without the area of the foot taking it by itself. So much so that this product has allowed people to walk without the terrific discomfort which kept them from strolling through the mall or even walking the dog.

It’s simply a matter of physics and physiology. See other solutions for calluses here.
